STEM

In STEM this term we have new things, a lot of things good and exciting learning time in STEM. We got a new schedule for stem which is Monday is reading and Tuesday is the experiment and of course, Tuesday is my favorite. The lessons we have learned are Acid and Base, Movement and we got to do experiments too. Acid and base are my favorite one overall because it is new to me and also I feel like I really got it. Sometimes I feel like I am not learning, but instead, I am taking it in step by step by just observing. I feel so natural like I don’t have to push myself so hard, but I get it more than I usually does. One more thing that I noticed myself in STEM class is that we just changed group and times so I feel like after the changing things happen I feel like I got to understand STEM better and also I feel like I like STEM now. Acid and base is the started of me where I started to like STEM even though to some people like me before I think that STEM is a really long process and there are so many things and vocabulary to learn,but when you got to understand it and when you learned it in different ways you will feel like you are not learning by just sitting class and read or listen to your teacher, but it about the discussing in team and using it in everyday life. One tip that I always did to remember about STEM things is that I keep it in real life. I try to look at the real-life example and also trying to making jokes or sentences or speaking with my friends about it so that it will always be in my head and I won’t forget it after we learned. For acid and base experiment this is what we did and what had happened:

Acid and Base test

Students will put into three groups for this experiment.

Material:

Cups

Red carbage solution as an indicator

  1. Lemon juice 2. Vinegar 3. Sprite  4. Water
  2. Toothpaste and water solution 6. Baking soda and water solution  7. Bleach.

Step 1

Add 20 ml of each solution to an each cup

This is what they turned to be

Pour indicator solution to each solution cup

Vinegar =pink

Baking soda and water solution=green

water=light purple

sprite=pink

Lemon juice=pink

Bleach=still

Toothpaste and water solution=purple ( Take note of the color change in every cups )

For more information about the experiment here is my lab report

First, we grab each of the material and poured those things above step by step then we mixed it with the indicator cup by cup.

For lemon juice, Vinegar, Sprite it turns in to pink because those are acidic. For water and toothpaste, they turned into purple or light purple because they are the neutral which is 7, not an acid or a base. For bleach and baking soda are a base because for the baking soda it turned into green while bleach doesn’t even change color at all. When we take Lemon juice cup ( already mixed with indicator) and Pour it in the bleach cup the reaction still the same which it turned to the bleach colors like we didn’t add anything. Then we take baking soda and water solution and pour it in the vinegar and It was a really high reaction because the bubble was coming up nearly to the top of the cup, and it turns in to purple which it turned into neutral. The last thing we did was we take Sprite and pour slowly into the toothpaste solution and it becomes pink which is the acid.

This is the first time I even have done anything like this. I always wanted to do it because I like to see what going to change. This is actually fun, but before the fun coming I was a mess. In our team, we messed it up about 3-4 times because we didn’t read the instruction properly, but that the lesson I learned at the same time with the Acid and base. I was really stressful actually when we messed up things got more and more complicated to me while when we have done it we feel it is an easy experiment we just have to do it exactly as step by step from the instruction. This is the one that we get right for the first time and also Alli (our teacher)is with us all the time for this one. I really feel sorry to her because we messed up a lot and if I was her I will be really annoying because we have done the same mistakes over and over, but that called experiment if we didn’t get it wrong we won’t remember it in the future. For me after these mistakes, I won’t forget about this lesson and also the experiences I have for today.

Here are some of the acid scale and reactions:

Math

This Math round is so interesting and a little bit different from the other round because we got to learn two different things in one round. The lessons that we learned about the most are Angles and percentages. The percentage is my most favorite lesson in this term. The percentage is really important to me. Even though it might be not so new to me, but I feel like I know about it more than I used to be. The percentage is nearly in everything, your phone battery, your school gender counting, for short it is to describe the number of the date. The percentage may sound so professional, but it is really is simple. It is easy than you think and also to understand it better we like to play games with it. One of those is https://kahoot.it  and http://quizizz.com. Most of the times we learned how to convert percentages to something else or something else to percentages.

In our class, we also create some of the quizzes on that website. You can check it out if you want to learn something new. About angles, we just started to learn about it just about two to three weeks. Angles is also not so new to us, but it is getting clearer when we learned about it again this time. There are three important things I got to learned and I really remember those are supplementary angles, complementary angles, and the 360 angles, also the vertical angles.

complementary angles

vertical angles

360 angles

supplementary angles

Humans of Cambodia

My exploration is called ”HOC” which stands for Humans of Cambodia and we got inspire by Humans of New York. In this exploration, we learned about the human’s life story. Why do we want to know about other people life story?  Well, we can not judge people by their covers there is no way you should judge people by just what they look like because you’ll never know what their story is. I am as a Cambodian I feel like there are many people out there that have many interesting stories and we’ll know and learned about them because sometimes it helps us to understand about them also the social and what the outside world really means. For these seven weeks explorations I have explored a lot of things and learned about many stories, but what I get and from this exploration back is I know more about myself and my country. Because of this exploration, I know that I am really passionate about interviewing and asking people for what they have experienced and ask for some advice. I feel really connected to other people even though I never experienced something like they did, but it makes me feel empathy and know how it feels. There are people out there who want others to know about their story because their appearance made some people judge them by the cover. Sit there Listen to their stories because it is a lesson which we called the life lesson. There is a quote say”Share“ Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” This is my favorite quote ever because it is real in real life like me if people tell me their stories I’ll remember those stories forever. Thanks to this exploration a lot because I found my passion which is interviewing people, but it the friendship way in the way where it is like the normal conversation, not the one that we called as the professional interviewing. This way I felt like I and the other people are connecting to each other even I never know even this is might be the first time I met them or heard their stories, but it made me feel like I know who there are and what their stories are.

In this exploration, we went on trips a lot because we want to interview people for their story and here are some pictures from the trips:

We were interviewing a grandpa at the Russian market.

we went to helping hands which is an organization, but it is more like a school.

We were interviewing a grandma whose house got fire in Steung Meanchey

Liger students in HOC exploration and the Helping hands. And also in this exploration, all the information and people stories are going to the blog Called Humans Of Cambodia.

Here is a link to our Blog: http://humansofcambodia.ligeracademyblog.org/

There are many people and stories out there, spend your time listening to their stories because it might be your inspiration to the other day!

Math

Decimal is one of the things we learned in Math this round. We are all focusing on decimal everything about decimals and we had just done our test. Decimals may seem hard, but after I learned about it I can tell that for me it is easier that fraction. One of the most fun things of learning about decimal is that we had play online games about decimals which made most of us understanding about it even more. We can also play it with our classmate in the class because one of the games is an online game and out of those online games I like it the most. It is called” Puppy Pull Decimal” you can check it up if you want to know why do I like it so much!

If I break it down a little we have learned about add, subtract, multiply, divide, turning decimals into fractions and of course turning the fraction into decimals, rounding decimals,

Let’s not talk about it because I am gonna show you one example of what I have learned.

6.74 + ? = 10.21

express 1/5 as a decimal.

Round 4.3561 to the nearest thousandth

This is a really fun topic in math and I know that I am gonna miss decimals after this round even though I know that we will still have it in class, but not as much as before.

Multimedia

Coding is not my passion and this round we learned about coding which Python. The code is a language that we have to speak correctly to make the program understand. I feel like it is a baby i have to speak its languages and have to be corrected, but sometimes it also the hardest parts of this round. We learned for a week and we’ll have the homework. We have learned many new things that some of us never know or heard of it before like me, I never saw something like this before. We learned about Python Conditionals and If Statements like Booleans Comparisons Indentation If statement Elif statement Else statement And, Or, Not, python for loops, while loops, infinite while loop etc.

Example: Write a program that prints “Hello World” 5 times USING A WHILE LOOP:

i=0

while i<5:

   print”Hello World”

   i+=1

Output:

Hello World  Hello World Hello World Hello World.Hello World

I think this is one of the most important parts of learning python because we can use it more than we think and for some reasons it is simple, but not the code.

Literacy

This literacy round is one of my unbelievable terms, This round we learned about the essay which one of us have to write an essay and we can choose our own topic on what we want to about. Writing an Essay is not easy, it takes time and as I learned about it I started to feel like writing is one of my weakness so I started to focusing more on writing than anything that time. I remember seeing myself always checking back and forth trying to find my own mistakes in the paragraph. We have about two to three weeks to finish our essays. Nowadays as I see everywhere around the world started to face this problem which is climate changes.

Do you think climate changes by natural or human activities?

This questions I wanted to know more than anything so I chose about this topic to be my essay. My essay is not perfect, but at least I’ll try to correct my mistakes again and again and I know nothing is perfect and there is always mistakes nobody is perfect so I want you to enjoy reading them.

Global warming

Global warming refers to the rise in surface temperature of the earth due to the greenhouse effect created by greenhouse gases. Global warming is a big environmental and social issue all over the world which everyone must know especially our kids and children as they are the future.

The temperature started to become hotter, sea level starting to raising. Does anyone had ever wonder why? well, most people like to think of the solution before they even think of the effect especially the small parts that can become a bigger problem. Before planning the solutions of global warming, we must think about the causes and effects of it first. Even though it is natural for the climate to change, human activities play a part in the causes of climate change. Two ways that this is done is the cutting down of trees which increases temperatures and all contributing factors of pollution.

Some people say climate change over time it is the natural occurrence, but according to an article on the NASA website, “A Blanket Around the Earth”, it talks about the causes and effects of climate change: “On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse” (NASA). This evidence is relevant to my statement because they said that humans are also a part of climate change. Moreover, it mentions that “Over the last century, the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2)” (NASA). By all of the theses above statement, they both have the human activity that leads to the bigger climate change problems. Have you ever think of the building the apartments the houses and places where you stand before used to be a thick forest? Have you ever notice your town, your country started to have more building. People cutting down trees to build those.The bigger the place is, the more trees that had been cutting down. Human cutting down those, and who will do they plant those trees back? Trees are the most useful source that we can use it to make many things such as paper, houses and more by cutting down those trees we will have more space for planting crops, building and what we want, however, without trees, cutting down trees are just like living without breathing. The Royal Parks is a website mentioned that “Trees absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen. What does that mean? Well, this means tree observe all of the harmful chemical and release oxygen back. They also said that”One large tree can supply a day’s supply of oxygen for four people”.

The question is Where are those chemicals come from? Those chemicals are from human activities. The human creates those chemicals by burning plastic, burning wood, cutting down trees, burning fossil fuels, smoke release by vehicles, smoke release from the factory and more from the same website. If there no more trees to observe those chemicals what will happen? There are a lot of things will happen. For the human, there is a high percentage of getting Cancer and skin diseases. This is why the trees are so important in our life. Protect the trees just like we protecting ourselves from Danger. Now, do you think that human activities play a part in the causes of climate change?

Do you know that you already play a small part in human activities that can cause climate change? Have you ever ride a car or a bus, a motorbike, a train before? Well if you do that means you are also a small part of human activity that can cause climate change. After knowing this information I hope you are patient of what around you. James Edward Hansen is an American adjunct professor directing the Program on Climate Science said that”Global warming isn’t a prediction, it is happening.”If you want to protect our planet think of everything around you. You can save it at the same time you also can destroy it. Choose your own choice because everything is in your hands.

After we finish writing our essays, we are now focusing on reading skill which we have four groups and four different books and they are:

Looking for Alaska Novel by John Green

Wonder Novel by R. J. Palacio

Monster Novel by Walter Dean Myers

The Outsiders Novel by S. E. Hinton

All of these books are the books that we read, and we can use by ourselves. For me, I used Finding Alaska and with our team, we have to meet and discuss once a week. Reading is a really fun topic because I love reading. I feel like it is more relax and learn at the same time. Not only we are focusing on reading, but we also focus on the ability, the skill of reading, the vocals. We started to read for about 1 week already, and it went very well because we like to discuss in the team and whenever we are free we always go to read together, this also makes us have more teamwork skill and also to build up our talking, discussion skill at the same time.

indigenous communities

This round exploration  I am in the”indigenous exploration and this exploration we are learning about the indigenous people in Cambodia. There are so many indigenous groups in Cambodia, but most of them are not really known well so we want to promote their groups, their culture, and who they are. We are focusing on two groups which are Kui and Stieng. We’ve been going on trips to learn about them and our main goals are to make promote them so we came up with ideas that we should make books about them and also Videos to share to other people who interesting and want to know about them.

For Kui, we went Preah Vihear to learn about them. In Preah Vihear a province that is not so far away from Phnom Penh which is Cambodia capital city, however, Kui is not only lived in Preah Vihear, but they also lived in some other parts in Cambodia, but we only went to Rovieng District, Preah Vihear. When I first heard of Kui In my head I saw the picture of people in the town wearing their traditional clothes and live in the traditional houses etc, but When we arrived there everything is so different from what I thought it is. The town seems to be just like Khmer town, I wouldn’t know it is Kui town if I didn’t hear people there speak another language which I don’t even understand. People there wearing the same cloth as we did, normal clothes, normal houses, and everything seems like nothing different between Kui and Khmer, but as we met and got to interview them we started to know more about them how they lived and more. First, the land they lived in is a shared land which mean all the people in the town is part of the land, they are all the owner of the land. They shared the land together as one, however, they divided and put the fence around their own houses because of protecting the plants and things from the animals, but the land is still everyone land. Kui is amazing everyone knows how to speak two languages including kids and old people. They speak Kui at home and with their family, but they go to school to learn Khmer at school which is a really amazing thing. Not to mention their foods which is the most amazing food I ever had if you ever go there don’t forget to try out their foods. The traditional dances, instruments they used are also what make them who they are. Not only they still have all of those things, but they still have their traditional ceremonies, habits, language and more. The more that you get to know them the more you feel close that is when you know that Kui is really friendly. We as students really want the world to know what they got and who are they, so after we gather all the information we make it into books about Kui called”Kui indigenous community Cambodia” After that, we went back to Preah Vihear to verify the information again before. Kui is one of my favorite indigenous group in Cambodia and I believe that if you get to know them as I did you will also like them as I did.

Kui people( Credit: Cindy Liu)

The second indigenous group that we have learned about is Stieng. Stieng is a group that mostly lived in Kroches(Kratie) and Mondulkiri, but we only went to Kroches province.

Stieng is one of the indigenous group that I never heard before. I am really interested in this indigenous group since I first heard their name. When we went to Snuol district, Kroches(Kratie), we finally got to know them, but there are so different from what we thought. When we step off our bus there is nothing different between Khmer and Stieng, everything also the language people there speak Khmer just like we did, their houses, clothes there are so hard to find out they are not Khmer. When we interviewed they said that only the old people who can speak Stieng while others don’t even understand especially their new generation, but some of them do understand, and some even can speak, but they are shy to speak. They also said that most of Stieng wants to be Khmer and some even said they are Khmer now. They went to school the same as Khmer and also learn Khmer. After we collected information about Stieng we created Videos about them by themes such as Education, Food, Economy, etc. This is also the reasons why we want to promote as who they are because some of them doesn’t like themselves as who they are. Times to times changes always happen to protect, and keep what they have is the best. I am as a person have knows these indigenous people I feel like I am really lucky, and I want other people to know about them too. By these trips I am learning something new, something different, and also precious memory that I will keep it with me forever and I will always remember them.

Math

In math class, We learned about fraction. Now we finished with the fraction then we are focusing on geometry. We learned a lot about the triangle and How to find the area and perimeter. We learned about measurement, different units example: Mr.Jungkook bought 5 yards of cloth. He used the cloth to make 12 BTS logos of the same size. How much cloth did he use for each logo? (give the answer in feet) . This is one of example that we have learned in class they give us in yards and we have to find it in feet.

This is the book that we learned.

This is the measurement and different units.

Literacy

This term we have learned about environmental justice and we been discussed about it a lot in class, form the discussion we have learned a lot also new words. We also learned about Agree or Disagree and Introduction to Argument with Evidence we had done a debate, but it is not a real debate because we also learned and discuss. This term in class I think I improve a lot on discussion with evidence and also researching too. We have been doing the Thesis statement which I think it is an areally important lesson and that I should remember it because I will use it a lot. Essay writing is what I need to improve on and now we are talking about it right now. Writing an Argumentative Essay topic that we research and working on. My main argumentative is about global warming and it is also it one of the SDG goals the number 13. We have to find that is the source is primary source or secondary source.
